Gyökeres Makes Debut as Arsenal Fall to Spurs in Historic Hong Kong Derby

Arsenal’s new No. 14, Viktor Gyökeres, made his first appearance for the Gunners in a dramatic pre-season friendly against Tottenham Hotspur, held in Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Stadium—marking the very first North London derby staged outside the UK  .

The match ended in a 1‑0 defeat for Arsenal, thanks to a stunning long-range lob from Pape Matar Sarr, who caught goalkeeper David Raya off his line just before halftime  . Despite controlling possession at times, Arsenal struggled to create clear-cut chances and managed only one shot on target  .

Gyökeres was introduced in the 77th minute, coming on for Kai Havertz, but only clocked around 13–20 minutes of playing time, depending on the source  . He managed just two touches, including one inside the Tottenham penalty area, and was unable to significantly influence the game  .

While the cameo was brief, Gyökeres was greeted with standing applause from the 47,000-strong crowd, signaling high excitement around his signing. Arsenal fans expressed a mix of hope and impatience on social media following the performance  .

Post-match analysis acknowledged that Arteta’s patience with Gyökeres is understandable—he arrived recently from Sporting CP and needed time to acclimatize physically and tactically. Arteta stressed that his fitness levels required careful management ahead of competitive football  .

Despite the loss, the debut still represented a milestone. Gyökeres is expected to receive more minutes in Arsenal’s remaining pre-season fixtures at the Emirates before the Premier League opener at Old Trafford on August 17  .
